Unit of Inquiry – ‘How the World Works-Water’
Work together with your child to make up a song about water using the tune of ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat’. Write or type it up, and make sure that your child is ready to sing it to the class.
For example:
Water, water everywhere
Drink it if it’s clean
Bubbling, bubbling in the pot
Then it becomes steam

***Please try to make a different one!***
Language Arts
This week we learned about the sounds ‘d’ (as in did and dad) and ‘r’ (as in red and rip).
Please remember to read a range of books with your child and discuss them.
Cut out the weekly words (red, dad, do) and stick them to card, try reading them by saying the sounds and blending them together. Keep them with your word collection.

Maths
We have been working on number bonds to ten (i.e. 5+5, 1+9, 7+3). Knowing these number facts greatly helps them with extended maths activities, so it is important they know them well. Those children who are fully confident with these facts already will work on number bonds to 20 and 30. We focus on mental and practical learning at this stage, not written. They can use their fingers-a great maths resource that is always with them! Ask your child ‘what makes ten?’ or ‘five and what makes ten?’ or ‘I have six, how many more do I need to make ten?’, or ‘I have ten taka, and my sweet costs 3 taka, how much do I have left?’

Please hand in all homework some time during the week after it is assigned.

Unit of Inquiry – ‘How the World Works-Water’

Look around your house for water in solid, liquid and gas form. Record what you find on the chart given using pictures. (For example, steam in the kitchen/bathroom, ice in the freezer, sweat on your forehead) Use the vocabulary ‘solid’, ‘liquid’ and ‘gas’. Encourage your child to think where solid water and water in the form of gas might be found before telling them.

Language Arts

This week we learned about the sounds ‘c’ (as in cat and car) and ‘k’ (as in kick and kit).

Please remember to read a rangeof books with your child and discuss them.

Cut out the weekly words (cat, kick, kit) and stick them to card, try reading them by saying the sounds and blending them together. Keep them with your word collection.

Maths

In maths this week, we have been learning to double numbers. Do some doubling with your child, for numbers below five (for example, ‘double 4’/’4+4’), they can use their fingers for numbers up to 10. Please use the method shown on the next page.

Unit of Inquiry – ‘How the World Works-Water’

(see attached sheet)

Parent: Fill a small glass with hot water, place a larger glass or clear jug up side down over the top of the steaming glass.

Child: Watch what happens to the steam when it hits the glass. Draw a picture below to show what you see.

Parent: Please write notes on your child’s work to let us know what they have said or noticed, and any questions or ‘wonderings’ they have.

Language Arts

This week we learned about the sounds ‘p’ (as in pin and pink) and ‘n’ (as in net and nine).

Maths

Take 2 containers, different sizes and shapes (e.g. pots, cups, bottles). Compare them by looking at them. Guess which one will hold the most. Use pouring from one container to the other (and vice versa) to find out which one really holds the most. Try with very different sized containers at first (e.g. a cup and a pan), and then compare containers that seem to be a more similar size. Can your child explain what is happening and how they know which one is bigger? Focus on careful pouring so that the comparison is fair-will the measuring be correct if water is spilled? Use vocabulary, ‘over-flowing’, ‘full’, ‘empty’, ‘half full’, ‘this one holds more/less’.

Unit of Inquiry – ‘How the World Works-Water’

Walk with your child around the home.
Where do you see water?
How is the water connected to your house?
Where does it come from?
Where does it go?
Can you find any other liquids in your house?
Look for things that are ‘wet’ or ‘watery’.
Practise talking about what you saw,
so that your child can tell the class all about it!

Language Arts

This week we learned about the sounds ‘t’ (as in tiger and turtle) and ‘i’ (short i, as in ink and pig).

Maths

Thank you to the students who turned in last week’s ‘math art’ homework. This week, use beans/buttons/Lego bricks (or any other objects you have) to find different ways to make five. Record on the sheet provided.

Please hand in all homework some time during the week after it is assigned.

Unit of Inquiry – ‘Who We Are-Our Senses’

Collection: Thanks to everyone who brought items in, they truly enhanced our unit of inquiry. We are still collecting things, so if you haven’t brought something in, there is still time.

*See the attached paper for inquiry homework.*

French

KGG has learned their first song in French! It is attached in the take home diary. Please have your child teach it to you and practice.

Language Arts

This week we learned about the sounds ‘s’ (as in snake and soda) and ‘a’ (short a, as in ant and apple)

Maths

We are continuing to explore numbers. The task is to have your child create an artwork to represent any one number. Be creative with this! Keep in mind there is no correct answer. Students can use paint, crayons, pens, pencils, felt tips, collage materials, play dough or anything else they can think of. Artworks will be displayed in class as part of our ‘Number Art Gallery’.

Please hand in all homework some time during the week after it is assigned.

Unit of Inquiry – ‘Who We Are-Our Senses’

Collection: For this unit, we will explore all of our senses in different ways. Please bring in a variety of objects, which require the use of all five senses (hearing, sight, feeling, smelling, tasting). Look at the attached list for some ideas.

Go on a senses walk in your environment with your child.

Encourage your child to talk about the senses they use when

they explore on their environment. Have your child use the

attached tick list to draw a picture of what they explore and

tick the senses they use to explore it(i.e. If they see a bird,

they should draw the bird and tick that they can see, hear,

and feel the feathers.)

Language Arts

Each week we will learn about different sounds.

· We will start our first sounds next week.

· Attached will be words with these sounds for you to make into flash cards.

· Cut out the weekly words and stick them to card.

· Have your child try to read them by saying the sounds and blending them together.

· Keep them with your word collection in a shoebox or tissue box at home.

· Students will bring in the collection at the end of the year.

Please remember to read a range of books with your child.

Maths

Here you will find different practical ways to continue the mathematics we are learning in class. This week, encourage your child to count the things in his/her environment. Ensure they are counting in order and that they are using one number per one object. Comment about what they did in their take home diary.

Please hand in all homework some time during the week after it is assigned.
